A healer's journey

From business to health via Indonesia-about Neil

Picture
Born in New Zealand, I originally had a successful career in business and the fashion world.
While on holiday in Indonesia in the early 1980’s I discovered natural medicine, and spent a number of years living with, and learning informally, from healers in the villages of Indonesia and Malaysia, in particular two elderly female massage therapists in Jogjakarta.
Next followed seven years of tertiary studies in Australia in Traditional Chinese Medicine, myotherapy, and a wide range of massage and bodyworks techniques.

Graduating in 1989 after 2,300 hours of myotherapy training, I have been in private practice ever since in a variety of settings including medical centres, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Canberra, and home based as well as clinic based practice.
Since 1998  I have enjoyed the rewards of passing on that knowledge so generously shared with me by others, as a lecturer at RMIT, Southern School of Natural Therapies, Australian College of Natural Medicine, Endeavour College of Natural Health, Kangan Institute, The Health Arts College and currently the Australian College of Fitness & Bodywork (ACFB).
I have combined my clinical practice with teaching at a number of tertiary institutes in broad areas of health science, Chinese medicine, natural medicine, and business.
I have for many years, supervised student’s clinical practice enabling me to share my industry experience. I have also served on industry boards and committees and developed, co-ordinated, and wrote new courses up to Bachelor degree level. I also provided in-house training to myotherapists and osteopaths at a number of leading health centres.
My passion is helping clients remove pain and dysfunction from their lives through my healing practice, while helping students past and present achieve life goals the teaching and mentoring of mentoring.
What keeps me teaching is the joy I derive from my student’s achievements. I bring a black sense of humour (Scorpio) to my classes, a practical “hands on” approach, and lots of stories from my life lessons, to illustrate key points.

I strive to find the cause of your pain, not just treat your symptoms. At your initial consultation I will take time to listen to your story and act the detective in picking up small clues that you will give me, that often lead to establishing the underlying cause of your pain, so I can work to eliminate that cause and not just treat the symptoms.

In my spare time I study Japanese language, walk/jog 100km per month, play in a rock-n-roll band, go bush in my old camper-van, reflects on what it was to be a hippy way back when, enjoy wine and food with friends, and occasionally meditate.
